Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup seedless raisins
1 cup water
3/4 cup soft shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

Simmer raisins in water in saucepan over low heat until raisins are plump, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain raisin liquid into measuring cup. Add water to make 1/2 cup. Heat oven to 400°. Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in raisin liquid. Measure flour by dip-level-pour method or by sifting. Blend flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices; stir in. Add rolled oats, nuts and raisins. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls 2" apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
